Storyline:It?s been three years since the beginning of Russia?s ?Special Military Operation? against hostile forces in the Ukrainian government, and Moscow seems no closer to achieving its goal in suppressing it leadership in Kiev, overrunning it?s military, or even fully controlling regions that it claims to have fully ?annexed? in 2022. The conflict itself seems to have blended into a strange mix of World War I trench warfare and modern combat involving remote operated drones and cutting edge hypersonic missiles.
Troops on both sides are weary and stretched thin across thousands of kilometers of frontlines, with minimal chances of rotation home to see loved ones. Under constant the bombardment of enemy artillery fire and ever mindful of observation and suicide drones above, they sleep in shifts.
One soldier we interviewed stationed along a branch of the Dnieper River near the now destroyed Kakhovka Dam gave us an account of his experience; he refused to give us his name.
[Translated] ?We are under the constant threat of Russian glide bombs and drones constantly, our troops can rarely leave our positions for fear of being attacked or monitored. If we move, we risk being spotted and if we are not killed outright; the bunker or trench we move to will be targeted soon after we get to it. None of us in my unit get much sleep, we average about two hours per night? We?re worn out and drained? I don?t know how much longer our troops can keep going against these waves of Russian attacks??
Support for the war also seems to have decreased on a global scale. As fractures have appeared within NATO about how support for the conflict should continue, it has exposed divisions within European allies about the position of Russia within Europe, and the effectiveness of economic sanctions. With spring upon Eastern Europe and the support of Pyongyang in the form of troops and armaments flowing into the region, the future of Volodymyr Zelensky and his government might very well be in question.
